It used to be that RAID was something that was reserved for high end enterprise servers, used only by large corporations and data centers. RAID was also limited to use with SCSI devices, which was one of the reasons that RAID was only used by companies that could afford it. SCSI drives are still not cheap by any means, but RAID has become much more accessible to many people. RAID controllers are now commonly found integrated onto motherboards and there are several companies that make add-in cards that allow you to use a RAID array in your computer. Though most typical consumers will not use RAID, there are many in the enthusiast/DIY crowd who do use it or perhaps plan to upgrade in the future.
