4K Video Editing PC - May 2017

A few years ago, your PC just couldn't be fast enough for digital video processing. By now every average PC is able to process Standard Definition (PAL 720x576) as well as HD Ready, but technology doesn't stand still. By now just about every smartphone can record in Full HD and the new frontier is Ultra HD, also known as 4K. This resolution and the 'accompanying' codec HEVC / H.265 require seriously powerful hardware.

AMDGPU-PRO 17.10 vs. Linux 4.12 + Mesa 17.2-dev Git

Given the RadeonSI/Gallium3D threaded pipe context work having landed earlier this week and there being other performance improvements with Linux 4.12 and Mesa 17.2-dev, here are some fresh benchmarks on an AMD Polaris card comparing this latest open-source graphics driver code as of this week compared to AMD's latest hybrid driver, AMDGPU-PRO 17.10.

ASUS teases AMD Ryzen powered ROG gaming laptop

ASUS is now teasing with its new trailer for 'Something Has Awakened' on its ROG channel on YouTube, with what should be a new Ryzen-powered gaming laptop in its growing ROG line up of gaming products. The company teases #Computex2017 - so we are only a week away from seeing it in action. Now, will ASUS use a new, unannounced APU powered by Ryzen, or will it be a high-end Ryzen 7 1700X/1800X with a dedicated GPU. If it's rocking a dGPU, will it be an AMD Radeon RX 580, unreleased Radeon RX Vega (that will be showcased on May 31 during AMD's Computex 2017 keynote) or one of NVIDIA's many GeForce graphics cards.

Linux GPU Driver Issues Are Still Holding Up Games In 2017

While Linux graphics drivers have been improving a lot, they are still not a trouble-free experience, especially when encountering new OpenGL games/workloads, even with NVIDIA's proprietary driver.

The latest is being pointed out to another cross-platform game with their Linux release being pushed back due to driver problems. ROCKFISH Games' Everspace, a single-player space shooter, is seeing its Linux release postponed because of problems with both AMD and NVIDIA Linux drivers.

NAS HDD review: 18 models compared

Despite the upswing of the cloud and increasingly cheaper SSDs, the most convenient and most affordable way to store large amounts of data is still a hard disk drive. In this article we take a look at 18 models meant for use in a NAS.

Hard drives might not be the cutting edge in terms of computer technology; for now there is not a cheaper way to store data. Nowadays there are a lot of affordable consumer models that offer an enormous capacity of 10 TB. If you want to store a lot of data locally, you cannot ignore this option.

A useful way to realize this is to use the hard drives in a network attached storage, or NAS. This has a lot of advantages compared to placing your drives in a system. For example, with a NAS every computer in the network can access the data. The rest of the functionality depends on if you purchase a cheap and ‘bare’ NAS purely for storage, or if you purchase a more expensive model with more features. The more expensive NAS-devices can download on their own and allow you to access your data through the internet (or with the use of certain smartphone-apps).

Vertagear Triigger 275 and 350 Gaming Series Chairs

Vertagear makes the bold claim that its Triigger 275 and Triigger 350 models are ‘Redefining gaming chairs.’ Mind you, that claim suggests you have a clear idea about the definition of a gaming chair. Some companies feel a gaming chair should look like a racing Recaro with bling colours and a chunky headrest while Vertagear instead puts the emphasis on support for your back and shoulders to keep you supported during lengthy gaming sessions.

The Triigger model names are derived from ‘more than 275 components’ and ‘more than 350 components’ which suggests you might have an extensive construction job on your hands when you buy a new chair. In fact the opposite is true as the chairs arrive assembled and simply require that you pop the hubless caster wheels in the base, slide in the gas ram and lower the seat on to the base. The entire process took less than five minutes including tidying away the packaging.
