Comparing Today's Modern CPUs To Intel's Socket 478 Celeron & Pentium 4 NetBurst CPUs

With Phoronix having turned 11 years old last week, there's been several interesting articles looking at the historical performance of Linux, large GPU/driver comparisons, etc. Today is arguably the most interesting birthday article yet. I dug out an old Intel Socket 478 system with the i875p Canterwood chipset and Pentium 4 and Celeron CPUs that still manage to power up. I compared the Linux performance of this 11+ year old system to a variety of today's x86 and ARM systems. Beyond looking at the raw performance, the performance-per-Watt was also measured to make for a very interesting look at how CPU performance has evolved over the past decade.

Times are changing, we have a thirst and need to access our data quickly and easily. We review the Voyager Air 2 from Corsair, this portable storage unit allows you to connect it to USB 3.0 and WIFI. It actually comes in a 1 TB HDD model as well, which we review. This great looking device might be what you're looking for to move or stream your content and with the latest Corsair Smartphone it might just be what the doctor ordered.

Deepcool Assassin II CPU Cooler Review

At the end of March, Deepcool announced the long awaited Assassin II tower cooler for the enthusiast market. Building upon the multiple award winning Assassin model, the new Assassin II keeps the nickel plated heatsink, 8 heat pipe twin tower design and mirror finished copper base, but updates the two fans to the new Deepcool GF 120 and GF 140 mm editions.

The U-shaped twin-tower design provides optimal spacing for the 8 heat pipes, arranged in a flat configuration for unencumbered air flow. The two fans facilitate air flow across the "shark-shaped" tower dissipation fins to maximize cooling.

The two GF fans are the newest offerings from Deepcool, featuring dual Fluid Dynamic Bearings (FDB) and a rubber mounting frame to reduce vibration transfer to the Assassin II tower cooler. The fan blade hub is removable for easy access to the bearings for dirt removal and re-lubrication to maintain smooth fan operation and optimal air flow.

EVGA GTX 980Ti SC ACX 2.0 + Review, Titan X has a Son

Filling a slot between the Nivida Titan X and the GTX 980 the EVGA GTX 980 Ti SC features 8 Billion Transistors a core clock of 1102 MHz, 2816 shaders, 176 Texture units and 96 ROPs 6GB of GDDR5 memory riding a 384-bit bus. In short it’s Nerd Candy of the sweetest kind. It is pushing 768 more shaders than the GTX 980, 32 more ROPs, 128-bit wider bus width and an having an additional 2 GB GDDR5.On the flip side of that equation the Nvidia Titan X gets 256 more shaders than the EVGA GTX 980 Ti, 16 more texture units, the same amount of ROPs, the same 384-Bit Bus but gets double the GDDR5 at 12 GB.

In Win 707 Full Tower Case Review

Now with the In Win 707 Gaming Black case we now see has a more conventional style and high build quality that is reminiscent of the older days both in construction and constraints that were there before and here now. The $139.00 price tag of the current In Win 707 Black Gaming case would have been $179.00 or more back in 2009 but times have changed and the case makers are doing their level best to keep cost down but sacrificing build quality is not in this one except for the plastic ODD door in the front. The rest is heavy duty steel, great paint, features and flexibility to make a huge server case or a minimalist gamer case. There is room for an extremely fat double CPU Server motherboard or an E-ATX or ATX regular sized motherboard.

Plextor M6e Black Edition 128GB PCI Express SSD Review

SATA compatible solid state drives (SSDs) may have been the ones to start their very own small performance revolution in the PC market almost a decade ago but as we speak thanks to several advancements in the field the tiny M.2 and full size PCI-express based models are the ones mostly preferred by professionals, serious gamers and enthusiasts. Fortunately although a few years back consumers only had a handful of such solutions to choose from by just a couple of manufacturers today most have at several such models in their product lines something which as expected has helped not only keep prices low but has also helped boost performance and durability levels. Plextor is without doubt one of the oldest players in the market and although they already have a rather successful PCIe SSD model in their lineup (M6e) they just recently released an updated version called the M6e Black Edition.

SteelSeries Apex M800 Mechanical Gaming Keyboard Review

Toady I will be reviewing the SteelSeries Apex M800 Mechanical Gaming Keyboard. This will my first review of a mechanical keyboard. In my opinion the worst thing about mechanical keyboards are the price. Most mechanical keyboards carry a higher price tag than your typical membrane keyboards. I always asked my self, how is that high of a price justified? Later in this review I will explain the features of a mechanical and from that you may see why a mechanical keyboard does hold some weight in having a higher price tag. I have never claimed to be fast at typing, as most of my typing is done with one hand while the other is planted on my mouse. With that being said I greatly noticed an increase in my typing speed, Now whether that is from the mechanical keys, the spacing of the keys, or the keyboard just fits my hands well, either way the keyboard is quite a pleasure to use and I believe my typing performance increased!

The other major trend in the newly released mechanical keyboards is the lighting. I can recall a few off the top of my head that seem very similar and claim to have all the same features and effects. The one thing that stands out about SteelSeries is the unlimited customizable abilities. Really your biggest limitation is your imagination and being able to transfer your ideas to the software. A few of the pre-made lighting effects are nice and I hope SteelSeries keeps on developing more for us to choose from. Now let us begin to examine this keyboard in greater detail and see what SteelSeries was able to do with the Apex M800.

XTraGear Carbonic XXL Desk Mat Review

Up for review today I have a rather large mousepad, or desk mat as they’re called, from XTracGear called the Carbonic XXL. This pad features a carbon fiber pattern that not only looks good but allows your mouse sensor to track better. The mat also features full stitching all around the edges of the mat to make sure it won’t fray or separate like some cloth pads tend to do after time. Read on to learn more…
