Ars Technica takes a look at Windows photo album software

Windows XP introduced a set of rudimentary photo tools to the operating system. Now, as any user of these tools knows, rudimentary is being used as the kindest of euphemisms. Sure, it was nice to be able to rotate images within Explorer and throw up a simple slideshow, but it was pretty easy to hear the laughter from Mac users once they got iPhoto. For those with a need for some heavy-duty photo organizing, there are plenty of third-party packages available. The options, as usual, range from the ridiculous to the sublime, but in true Ars fashion we've weeded out the lousy ones for you. What remains is a sampling of the finer tools out there, one of which should happily serve the many flustered photographers out there.
