So, what is Whistler? For the most part, it´s a minor upgrade to Windows 2000 and, at the same time, a major upgrade to Windows Me. You see, Microsoft is in the process of taking all the many consumer-oriented features from Windows Me and grafting them onto Windows 2000. Back in 1993 Microsoft first introduced the far more reliable Windows NT, from which Windows 2000 is derived, but it was never widely adopted by consumers because of cost, steep hardware requirements, and lack of compatibility with older Windows applications.
