At its heart, Windows XP is basically the next version of Windows 2000. It´s built on the Windows 2000 kernel, which has now been renamed to the more generic Windows Engine, and utilizes the same basic software architecture of Windows 2000. This means that technologically, Windows XP is a descendent of Windows NT, and not Windows 9x.
