Shims are what we call cheap insurance for your cpu. It prevents the core from being crushed, cracked, scratched or otherwise damaged during a heatsink installation or removal. For most users, a shim isn't necessary unless they plan on changing heatsinks down the road or have no experience installing one. None the less, I still feel a lot safer installing a heatsink knowing my $200 investment is in good hands.Read more
